Description
The Wailing Wall whose lower sections date to about the second century B.C.E., is located in the Old Quarter of East Jerusalem in Israel. Built of thick, corroded limestone, it is about 60 feet high and close to 160 feet long, though most of it is engulfed in other structures. The wall is the closest worshipers can get to the location of the old Jewish Temple, according to Jewish religious law, and hundreds of worshipers visit the wall to pray every day. Under Jewish Orthodox law, men and women are separated into different areas to pray. On the lower bottom right, Jewish woman can be seen looking over the fence for a mail relative on the men’s side. Paper notes and prayers are stuffed into the cracks between the stones to the left of her head for many yards.
